About Us

The South African Concert and  Marching Band Association (SAMBA) is a non-profit association that was started in 1994. Our main goal is to promote music in our youth and to provide a competitive platform for young musicians to perform and showcase their musical talents in order to obtain the honour of being called the best in the country and qualify for SAMBA National Colours.

Although the Association was initially known as the South African Marching Band Association (SAMBA) from 1994, the Association's  first constitution was drafted was constituted on 29 October 1999 by Mr. Cecil Reed and Mr. Phillip Breedt as SAMBA Chairman together with well renound Arranger and Maestro Mr. D.J.F. Smith, Mr. Terrence Cole, Mr. Lodewyk Meijer and Ms. Annamarie Meijer. It was also during this time that the Association realised the growing interest of concert bands and changed the Association's name to the South African Concert and Marching Band Association

It was later in 2001 that Mr. D.J.F. Smith took the lead as SAMBA Chair taking the Association to new heights by introducing a new "flair" to music and entertainment through his love and passion for music and youth-upliftment. Mr. D.J.F Smith served a 17 year successful term when the Association announced that it is making way to newer and younger blood. The Chair was handed over to Mr. A Prinsloo in September 2017.

Mr A. Prinsloo has always been involved with SAMBA having competed in the National competition and earned SAMBA National Colours numerous times. Mr A. Prinsloo have also been part in the Association behind the scenes developing software and also SAMBA visibility on Social Media.

It was also during 2017 that the Association realised the need to stay relevant to the communities it serve, and officially changed its name to the South African School Band Association (SASBA) and also became a registered Non-Profit Organisation (200-765 NPO)
